15 A/ SMOKING: THE FACTS

Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 different chemicals, many of which are harmful. Nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar are three components of smoke which affect the human body. There are many serious and often fatal diseases caused by smoking. The most common of these are: coronary heart disease, cancer of the lungs, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other lung diseases. Smoking can also increase the incidence of everyday complaints which people often do not see as being related to their smoking, e.g. coughing, sneezing and shortness of breath on exertion.

Many smokers think the risks are acceptable but in practice smokers often think of the risks as being much lower than they really are. Among those who do accept that the consequences can be severe there is a tendency to think it will never happen to them.

Babies and young children are particularly at risk if one or more people smoke in the household in which they live. They are more prone to chest, ear, nose and throat infections, and to more serious chest conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Unlike adults, young children do not have any choice about whether or not they are exposed to tobacco smoke.

Giving up smoking is probably the greatest single thing smokers can do to improve their health.
