17 A/ EAT A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT FOOD

To stay healthy, we need a ´fuel mix´ that no single food can provide. Different food supply different mixtures of the essentials. Eating plenty of different food is the best way to make sure we get enough of all the nourishment we need.

There are four main groups of valuable food:

1.Bread, cereals and potatoes. Starchy food like bread, rice, pasta, cereals and potatoes should be the main part of most meals and snacks. As well as energy, starchy food provide vitamins, protein, fibre and minerals, with little fat. If we don't add much fat or sugar, they are not high in calories.
2.Vegetables and fruit. Try to eat some vegetables or fruit at every meal or snack. All kinds of vegetables and fruit provide valuable vitamins, minerals and fibre, with little fat.
3.Cheese, milk and yogurt. These pieces of food are rich in calcium, protein and B vitamins.
4.Meat and alternatives. These pieces of food are useful for protein, vitamins and minerals. Lean meat, all fish, beans, peas and lentils can be eaten freely, but we don't need large amounts.

Occasional food, e.g. biscuits, cakes, chocolate, cream, jam, sugar and sweets are less useful to our health. But in small amounts they do no harm.
