24 A/ PHYSICAL HEALTH

Physical health is the absence of disease, pain, or abnormal condition. It is in a constant state of change as the body adapts to conditions and events affecting it. Good physical health is important for anyone in health care. Good health makes it easier for you to perform your duties. Being healthy is an example you should try to set for your patients. To be healthy, you have to pay attention to your body as though you were your own patient.

When you begin caring for patients, a question you often will ask them will be, "How do you feel today?" The answers your patients supply will tell you what to do for them. It is not necessary to ask yourself this question. But you have to respond to what your body tells you. Waiting for a problem to develop is not the best way to ensure good health. Health problems can be minimised through regular physical exams and dental checkups.

Personal hygiene affects your image and may affect your susceptibility to cross infection and disease. Your personal care must reflect the higher overall standards from people in health care. Basic personal care includes clean skin; clean, neatly combed or brushed hair, and the absence of body odour. Hands and nails must be clean. If the use of makeup and perfume, the length of nails and the use of nail polish, and types of hair styles are covered in policies set by your employer, follow them.
